Company Columbia Sportswear was founded in 1938 in Portland, as a small family business, in which the owners and together with their staff dedicated to continuous efforts to better functionality, quality and product innovation. It has grown from a small family-owned company focusing on distribution of hats to one of the largest companies specializing in outdoor apparel and the leading seller of skiwear in the United States. In the management of the company is 80-year old "Mother Gert Boyle", company director, and her son, Tim Boyle, President and CEO. Columbia's history starts with Gert's parents, Paul and Mary Lamfrom, who bought a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, and named it "Columbia Hat Company," after the river that borders the city. Later, dissatisfied deliveries from suppliers, Lamfroms decided to start their own production. In 1948, Gert married college sweetheart Neal Boyle, who joined the family business and later the growing company managed. When Neal suddenly died in 1970, Gert invited to help her son Tim.
